The Jet Mindset

Been there. Not that often, but more than once. It really is amazing. You leave when you want. You arrive in privacy and calm. It is a privilege and it means you are privileged. I can’t find anything bad to say about actually flying on a medium sized corporate jet.

But the metaphors disgorge a different reality. High flying is special. But it disconnects us…from being grounded. I remember being in probably the fanciest and most ridiculously decadent restaurant in one of the most outlandish cities in the world. Our group had actually flown commercial this time, but at the dinner table it was the private jet mentality that prevailed. In the midst of all this splendour, senior corporate executives eating the most expensive food at the fanciest restaurant in the the most notoriously garish of towns, the conversation turned…to the need to abolish welfare. Yes it really did. This time I said something and stopped everyone in their tracks – even I could see beyond the irony, to the dark ugliness.
